Well there is no specific reason behind this. If it’s a casual day then an open-button shirt looks cool and for occasions like party or a lunch, then a half-done button shirt is appropriate. Like some of the others here, comfort and body hair are big ones. However, the nips are another. My button up shirts are just thin enough to let everyone know when I’m feeling a bit chilly. I guess they wear it to prevent sweat from seeping through the shirt. Why they dont button it , i have no idea. I dont wear tshirts under. How has this literal question been asked on Quora multiple times? Particularly with regards to the ‘American’ aspect? I have never noticed this shirt look to be a uniquely American phenomenon (or for that matter a male one). I think it’s called ‘layering’, which is just a common aspect of dress unless I am noticing it wrong. (Doubt it.)
